NUKE + UNREAL ENGINE VFX FOR SUNFLOWER/SOUL
I've just wrapped up the couple of #VFX shots using NUKE and Unreal engine for my latest short film: "SUNFLOWER/SOUL" A very personal memoir-journey film shot on my iPhone in #India and New York City. To learn NUKE, I dove into courses by the legendary Steve Wright, Victor Perez (whose ongoing Node-by-Node series is a must-watch), and Joshua Toonen, whose insights into integrating Nuke with Unreal Engine opened new doors for me. As a filmmaker, I love Unreal Engine's real-time filmmaking capabilities. But I don't tie myself down to "real-time" as a constraint. For eg., in this project, I used Unreal capabilities for shot exploration to find that singular camera move and environment that told the story in a way I hadn't preconceived or been conscious of -- tying it into the meaning and feeling of the film. This journey wasn't just about learning a tool; or exploring a workflow; it was about learning to discover the soul of a story.
Next up for me, is to work on another short film that wants to play with #Copycat and Machine Learning! My future projects will continue to include the key elements of Real-Time as well as the traditional tools of Compositing combined with the evolving toolsets around Machine Learning.
In these complicated times of change and anxiety, as I continue to navigate my way to a career in the wonderful, tough-as-nails, and fulfilling world of film and VFX, pushing my own boundaries and telling my stories, one script and shot at a time, keeps me happy, healthy. I wish the same for you in whatever you choose to do.
